dressing for halloween: the man with the yellow hat

My son Gus is not one to pick a traditional costume. Last year, he was a green apple.

The best part of the apple costume was that Gus helped to make it himself. He helped with the paper maché and the painting of his apple. He even picked out his green jeans and sweatshirt (H&M is wonderful for this type of stuff).

The year before that? He was Cookie Monster. Blue footie pajamas with pompoms and google eyes? I think yes.

So this year, after hearing for the last 12 months that both of my four year olds planned to be spiderman for Halloween, I was not at all surprised when Gus picked something a little less mainstream: the man with the yellow hat. That's right. Curious George's friend.

I had big plans to make Gus a costume, but it turned out there was no need. I found a yellow button down shirt at Old Navy (it is no longer available online, but here's a yellow shirt from Sears), yellow pants from Carter's, boots at Target, and we found a hat at the thrift store that Gus is already working on.

Of course, we had to have a stuffed monkey as well. I'm fairly certain that this was Gus's reason behind the entire costume: the need for a stuffed monkey.

Now all we need is a polka dot tie and we are set. I'll give you the update as soon as we have all the pieces. I can't wait to see what he looks like all dressed up!

Update: here is the full costume minus the hat.
