the review: Thanksgiving dinner
Holy cannoli! We ate a lot of amazing food yesterday. On our front porch. You’ve seen the menu. We made it all. And we ate and ate and ate. The one last minute substitution was apple pie for the pumpkin. But the pecan pie was so good, no one bothered with the apple.
My husband said the baked turkey was the best he’d ever made. And then he tried the fried. Winner. People, get out your fryer for Christmas and go for it. Also, splurge on the HoneyBaked ham. Yum.
For green beans, we ended up using a recipe out of Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking – Smothered Green Beans with Carrots and Ham (page 472). Excellent. For the Brussels sprouts (my favorite of the day), we chopped the Brussels sprouts really fine, then cooked them down in a little bit of bacon grease and a can of chicken broth (to 2 pounds Brussels sprouts). Add some salt and pepper. Once they are done cooking, we topped them with crunchy thick-cut bacon and goat cheese. Amazing. I could eat this every day.
Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving! Be back soon with some gumbo pictures and an update on the lasagna.
