the review: grilled herb burgers

I like a good burger. Despite what my kids might think, burgers are not my favorite food, but when done well (and not well done), there’s nothing quite like a good burger. Hands down restaurant favorite? Somewhat embarrassing to admit, but the burger at Father’s Office in Santa Monica. I haven’t had one in years so perhaps the burger is tastier in my memory than in reality, but how can you go wrong with caramelized onion, bacon, gruyère, blue cheese, and arugula? I’m not above putting up with a little bit of I’m-so-much-cooler-than-you for good food. Favorite at home recipe? No question. Sausage burgers with grilled green chilies from Donald Link of Herbsaint in New Orleans via Food and Wine Magazine.

Let’s call it like it is. The grilled herb burger is your basic turkey burger. Yes, there is also some ground beef, but really, it’s a turkey burger. My husband said he would eat these again. The little kids refused to eat them even once. I’m kind of with the little kids. I appreciate the attempt to gussy up the turkey burger but there is just not enough flavor in these for me to waste the calories.

BUT if you like turkey burgers, give this recipe a try. Add some salt and pepper. Add A LOT of herbs. I for one am going to keep going back to real burgers. If that’s what you are after too, take the time to try the sausage burger with grilled green chilies. Substitute some ground beef for a bit of the sausage. You won’t be disappointed.
