Remember a few weeks ago (ok, seven weeks ago, but who’s counting?) when I said my twins were already getting into planning mode for their 5th birthday? Do you also remember how I told you that the twins had decided on a knight and princess themed birthday party? They were dead set on the idea. They were pinning things. We bought a dragon piñata. We searched the dollar store for decorations. They were all, “Mom, let’s make swords.” And “Mom, can we [editor’s note: “we” always means “mom” when my kids use it in this context] make everyone dragon tails? ” And “Mom, what if someone doesn’t want to dress like princess? I can ask everyone what they want to be and then you can make them all a costume.”

superhero party: an update

When we last left off, we were discussing how I am a lame mom who convinced her kids to settle for a school party rather than the huge, elaborate superhero party that they really wanted. Ok, I may have been feeling a bit guilty about this as I dropped them off at school and may have ordered balloons and gone with two cakes (ok, one cake and cupcakes) and figured out a way to hang a banner and capes outside to make their party more official.

My youngest children turn four today. Four. Just yesterday they were little bugs and now they are big bugs with minds of their own and (strong) opinions and language and incredible fashion sense.

And they really like superheroes. I mean really like superheroes. They have been talking about having a superhero birthday party for the last three months.  They wanted to invite practically everyone we know to their birthday party. I agreed. I pinned. I planned. I was going to go all out. And then, with three weeks to the big birthday, I had no kitchen and half done floors and no idea when I might be back in my house. I caved. I just couldn’t throw a party. Total fail as Mother of the Year.
