why can't i pick an exterior paint color? (modern southern bungalow week 18)

You can't rush progress, y'all, and in this case, you can't rush Houston humidity. The drywall is hung and ready for mud, but at this rate, it will be next January before it is dry enough here to do anything with these walls. We are already seeing mosquitos. Ugh.

Meanwhile, we've started looking at paint colors for the exterior of the house. Truth? We've been looking at paint colors for over a year. My kids have begun to revolt when we drive around the neighborhood looking at paint combinations. We were asked to pick a paint color way back in October before we picked the roofing material. Remember this? Yep. September was so long ago.

foolproof kid-clutter management

How do you stay on top of picking up after your kids? Do you fight the good fight Every. Single. Day? When you walk into a room is there always kid stuff on the floor? You know the things I’m talking about. Socks and books and toys seem to just fall off of your kids where ever they are and you are so over asking your kids to pick up after themselves. Good storage fine and all, but what about the stuff that doesn’t end up in its cute little identified storage space?

kid stuff storage 101

The clutter of kids is unfathomable. The doll accessories, the Legos, the stuffed animals (oh, goodness, the stuffed animals!), the clothing, the school papers, the sports gear, the art projects… It’s enough to drive any parent mad. If only there was some way to contain the chaos.

Before you get all excited, I don’t have *the* magic answer here. My kids leave their socks in the middle of the floor and walk over them 30 times just like your kids. I do, however, have some tips to lessen the load. And let me get right to it by saying that my number one tip isn’t a decorating tip at all, but rather a way of life instilled in my husband by my mother-in-law that actually works: the old circular file is your best friend.

what lights you up?

I dread being asked “What do you do?” There is something about this question that makes me want to crawl into a hole. The answer should be save the world or create world peace, but let’s be honest, the Nobel Prize team is not going to be knocking on my door any sooner than the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes team.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m thrilled to talk about design. I’m going to talk all about it in a minute here and you are going to want me to shut up (good thing you can always x out of this page). That thrill is because there are things about family living that turn me from normal to nerd in half a second. I am now lucky enough to be pursuing something that makes me tick, that keeps me awake at night in a positive way, that creates energy rather than sucking it…You know what I’m saying, right? If you don’t, let’s definitely talk about that.

I’m throwing a party and you're invited

What is the first thing you do when you decide to throw a party? I'm not talking the practical things like picking a date or making a budget. I’m talking the fun stuff. Do you plan the food? Shop for decorations? Make a guest list? I’ll bet you throw a great party.

It turns out, decorating your home is a lot like throwing a party. There are four major things to look at when doing either: theme, mood, guests, and venue. Let’s see how far this analogy can stretch, shall we? I suspect it could be a whole dang series…

conversation is better than content

I know, right? It's been 3 months since my last blog post and I feel like I should be going to confession or something. I promise you, a lot has been going on and nothing has been going on and it is still a circus inside my house (and head).

One of the things I've struggled with for some time is the feeling that much of blogging and social media these days feels like noise. It's like we are all yelling at the top of our lungs into this void and hoping that something sticks. Things begin to all look the same. When I start to feel that I am not inspired by my feeds, that I'm scrolling and scrolling and scrolling, it is time for a change. I don't want to look at the same thing anymore. I don't want to contribute to it either.

the hunger season

Have you ever heard Keb’ Mo’s song “God Trying to Get Your Attention”? It might be one of my all time favorites. And for those who don’t want me to get all religious on you, it’s cool. I don’t think anyone is going to be singing this song at their place of worship anytime soon. (But if you are, let me know. That’s a church I’d like to check out.) Anyway, I’ve had a God Trying to Get {My} Attention moment over the last couple of days and feel compelled to do something somewhat out of the ordinary on this blog. Today, I’m going to make a big old request for help.
