let’s talk about french potato salad

I can’t stand mayonnaise. I’m just not a condiment person. Or a cream sauce person. When it comes to potato salad or coleslaw, it goes to reason that I will pick a vinaigrette over a mayo or buttermilk based dressing any day of the week. My husband fortunately knows about my (strong) anti-mayonnaise sentiments so he was wise to pick Ina Garten’s French potato salad to go with our barbeque last Sunday.

let’s talk about green bean and ground turkey stir-fry

Ground turkey? I’ll be honest. I really wanted to name this dish something else, at least for purposes of this blog post, because if you are anything like me, you see ground turkey and you think bla-and. Get ready for a shocker. This green bean and ground turkey stir-fry is so good that I’ve made it twice. And it might be one of the easiest weeknight dinners that you can possibly make.

let’s talk about gemelli with asparagus and mozzarella

I’ve previously mentioned my obsession with magazines. I’ve also previously mentioned my admiration of Martha Stewart. So it goes without saying that I have a backlog of Martha recipes that I pull out in a pinch. Except when I can’t find them. Anywhere.

This may have happened to me recently when I found myself at the grocery store completely uninspired and staring at the produce section. I had decided on swordfish for supper and could not for the life of me think of a side. Can we interrupt this blog post for a minute so that I can point out that there was no meal plan? None. I believe this was day three or four in a row that I found myself in the grocery with absolutely no plan for supper. Isn’t that why you started this darn blog in the first place? To be more organized and spend less time in the grocery store and less time thinking about dinner? Why, yes. Yes it is. This would be what we call a complete fail.

the review: monster cookies

I spent a good portion of my formative years in Eugene, Oregon, or as I like to call it, Granolaville. It’s cool, though, because I have some good memories of eating tiger stripe ice cream at Prince Puckler’s (even the President ate here but he definitely could have made better choices in the flavor department), pizza and Mrs. Pacman at Mazzi’s, and of course, cookies at the Cookie Monster Company. So when I saw this post by I Am Baker on Instagram a week or so ago, I was smitten. (P.S. You really should follow Amanda. Good looking photos and a sense of humor. Kind of a girl crush going over here.)

the review: broccoli pesto potato skins

When I was a little girl, let’s go with eight or nine or twelve, my grandmother used to take me into the city for lunch and a day of shopping every summer. I am now going to admit something downright disturbing. One of my favorite places to go was (wait for it) TGI Friday’s for potato skins. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when we stopped there. For real. Did I mention “the city” was New Orleans? That’s right. In the city of gumbo and red beans and Mother’s drip beef po-boys with debris and shrimp po-boys and fried catfish, I was excited about potato skins at TGI Friday’s. I know now that I am an adult that my grandmother either loved me more than life or hated food to suffer through that culinary disaster not once but mulitple times. I loved me some potato skins.

the review: (fancy) italian night

So you know how it goes. The kids go back to school and maybe you are feeling a little guilty about the fact that you are SO EXCITED that they are back in school or maybe you are just an over achiever and you decide that you want their first day to finish with an amazingly tasty meal. You start early. You prep, you sauté, you cook. You show up to the table with a beautiful meal and everyone is all smiles. Does this sound familiar to you? Yep. Me neither.

the traveling alphabet

A couple of weeks ago, I was picking up craft supplies to help the little kids make a Father’s Day book, when I remembered that dry-erase markers work on plastic page protectors. It seemed like a mini $1.99 album might be just the thing a little person could use for practicing his or her letters. It was a total ah-ha moment. You know, the kind of moment where you are so proud of yourself for thinking of something magical and life altering and everyone else just nods their heads politely like, “Of course you can make an alphabet book from a photo album. I did that last week. We’ve moved on to carving marble.”

the review: chicken lo-mein

Chicken Lo-Mein is the perfect vehicle for refrigerator clean out. I bought absolutely nothing for this recipe. That said, I didn’t follow the recipe to the letter. Interestingly, I didn’t click over to the original recipe (the recipe that I followed was a modified version) until after I made the lo-mein for dinner. Mine was a lot more like the original recipe than the one that I followed. These things happen.

the review: sneaky banana muffins

I may have mentioned before that we make banana muffins all the time around here. As in so often that I no longer have to look up the recipe. And neither does our Girl-Friday, Lacie. I keep banana muffins in the freezer for snack or breakfast on the go or lunchbox treats. The recipe that I have used forever is from an old Williams Sonoma cookbook for kids that my mom gave my older kids ten years ago. Fortunately, the recipe is available online here.

the review: homemade fruit roll-ups

I mentioned earlier this week that I am taking a kids' nutrition class online. I’ve made quite a few new recipes this week with the kids and can say that we have been mostly successful. The kids are eating more vegetables for sure. Perhaps the carb filled vacation that we just had was overload for them too. Anyway, one of the things that I tried to make this week was homemade strawberry roll-ups. I sorted through a bunch of recipes (some of which you can see here), each with slightly different sugar content, each with slightly different technique, but all involving puréeing the fruit then baking it at 170° for several hours. This seemed pretty easy.

the review: broccoli mac and cheese

Can I start by stating the obvious? Construction projects are not fun. Don’t get me wrong, the results are great. But be honest. If you were putting an outlet in a white island, what color would outlet would you use? Black, of course. Any fool knows that. I mean, you want the very first thing that your eye is drawn to in the kitchen to be the island outlet. Really? Black outlets on a white wall? You would also paint over gouges in the wall without patching them in hopes that no one would notice the gouges that were already pointed out to you. Let’s just say I was NOT at my personal best in terms of behavior yesterday.

the whole food debate (or trying to get my kids to eat more better)

If you are following along at all, you will know by now that we just spent two weeks traveling with five of our kids. I’m a stay-at-home mom, so I spend a bit of time with my kids as it is, but not like this. No individual sports, no lessons, no school, no movies with friends, no work, no volunteering. All family time of some sort. Not all family together all the time, but family time in twos or threes or sevens all the same.

Let me just say first that my kids are pretty darn cool. I can roll my eyes and make jokes about them, but they truly are fantastic kids. And the vacation was an experience that I won’t forget. It was amazing to spend time with each of the kids in a way that my husband and I never get to do. But enough with the pleasantries. My kids eat junk. All the time.
