let’s talk about kung pao fish

My husband came home from the grocery store the other day with red snapper and a selection of vegetables. “I thought we would have stir-fry,” he said.

What I should have said was, “Thank you, honey, for planning dinner and going to the store. That was so awesome!”

What I actually said was, “Fish stir-fry? Gross. Have you ever actually heard of fish stir-fry?”

Not my finest moment as a wife. Did I mention that I was napping when he went to the store? With the kids? Yep. Not my finest wife moment at all.

let’s talk about gemelli with asparagus and mozzarella

I’ve previously mentioned my obsession with magazines. I’ve also previously mentioned my admiration of Martha Stewart. So it goes without saying that I have a backlog of Martha recipes that I pull out in a pinch. Except when I can’t find them. Anywhere.

This may have happened to me recently when I found myself at the grocery store completely uninspired and staring at the produce section. I had decided on swordfish for supper and could not for the life of me think of a side. Can we interrupt this blog post for a minute so that I can point out that there was no meal plan? None. I believe this was day three or four in a row that I found myself in the grocery with absolutely no plan for supper. Isn’t that why you started this darn blog in the first place? To be more organized and spend less time in the grocery store and less time thinking about dinner? Why, yes. Yes it is. This would be what we call a complete fail.

the review: french bread pizza, salmon, pad see yew

Dear Diary,

It's been over two weeks since my last food review. People are probably going to think that I don't cook anymore. The truth? I'm cooking all the time but can't seem to get photos of my food that make any sense at all. Am I in a photography rut? Should I just throw my hands in the air and give up? Or maybe rename the blog to something like "susie makes supper without proof"?

the review: skillet fish on the grill

I had THE BEST dinner last night. Sorry for the yelling but it was so good. And unfortunately for the rest of my family, I was the only one really eating. That’s not entirely true. The littlest people each ate a piece of fish (along with leftover pizza). It was like pulling teeth to get them to try the fish, but once we got over the initial hump, they both actually liked it.

the review: halibut with asparagus and smashed potatoes

We’ve had a few changes to the old menu already this week and it is only Tuesday. On Sunday night, we (my husband) opted out of halibut in favor of Kings’ playoff hockey at the local watering hole. I went with a pretty tasty turkey club and the Kings won. I’m sure the two are connected. We moved our lovely halibut to Monday night, thinking we would push everything on the menu back by a night, only to find that our oldest daughter, freshly back from college and entertaining a visiting friend, will be joining us for dinner tonight. I just can’t see serving lo-mein as planned. I think we might go with the fajitas

the review: citrus grilled salmon

Um, wow. Let me start by saying that neither my mom nor I are salmon people. My mother grew up in Louisiana where red fish and trout were king (along with shellfish, of course), and where most often, fish was fried. I grew up influenced by Cajun cooking and by my mom’s culinary experiences. Salmon was just not a part of the picture.

the review: pan roasted fish with Brussels sprouts and beets

Ok, so I am gushing over this new cookbook, right? Collards and Carbonara. Yum. And I decide to make Flounder with Beets, Brussels Sprouts & Brown Butter. Only, I can’t find flounder. Or baby beets. And I don’t have a pressure cooker to cook the beets. And I have absolutely no clue what sea beans are.

Carry on. Yep, that’s what I did. Just like that overused, over-edited, over updated sign. I bought groceries and carried on. The only white fish at my market was sole. I picked the smallest beets that I could find. The recipe called for 12 baby beets for four people. I had non-baby beets and eight people. I went with eight beets. I bought some Brussels sprouts. Was it two pounds? I doubt it. But I knew how to roast garlic and I finally found Sherry vinegar. I was ready to go.

the review: teriyaki salmon and lentils

Confession time. I can’t see and I did not cook this meal. In fact, I’m not sure that I will be cooking much for the next week. I had a little surgery on my right eyeball on Thursday. Let’s just say it was a tad more involved than I thought it would be. I’m actually squinting out of one eye with my glasses on to type this. And I look like someone punched me in the face. No joke.
