valentine's cookies - part 1

I had this vision of making darling mini heart cookies for the preschool class Valentine’s Day party. I picked up the little cookie cutter and some mini heart sprinkles. Adorable little red and white striped bags to put them in for each kid…I’m still working on it. Fortunately, the party isn’t until Thursday and I had time to get a test-run in before giving my kids’ classmates something totally inedible.

Have you ever read the “The Incredible Book Eating Boy” by Oliver Jeffers? It is the story of a boy who eats books rather than reading them and becomes so hungry for knowledge that he starts devouring books faster than he can assimilate what he is learning. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve uploaded photos from my camera, only to find that they were all just slightly off, and wished that I could just eat books on photography. I’d eat books on design and blogging and cooking and art and language. I’d eat books on business and money management and sewing and crafting. I’d eat books on parenting and marriage and friendship.

the more things change...

On Friday night, I found myself attending twelve mini parties, each with its own theme. There was a carnival, a gem workshop, a secret garden…and lots of women dressed in sequins and tutus. I think it is pretty obvious at this point that parties are not exactly in (or frankly anywhere near) my comfort zone. But I was curious enough about how the mini-parties worked and really wanted to see the décor, so I sucked it up, sucked on a dress and went. And it was fun. First thing first. I love Red Stamp. If you haven’t tried their app, you should. Today. In fact, Valentine’s Day is coming. I challenge you to send your special someone (or someones) a Valentine every day for the next few weeks. It is super easy. And really cute. And you can email or Instagram or text your cards. Or Red Stamp will mail them for you. Really. I might have to throw a valentine making party when I get back just so that I can send out invitations. Ok, if you know me at all, you know I don’t actually need an excuse to send out invitations.

afternoon baking

I make oatmeal cookies so often I can almost do it with my eyes closed. Sometimes I use Craisins, sometimes I use chocolate chips or peanut butter chips. Basically I add whatever is in the pantry. My go-to recipe is from a now extinct Williams-Sonoma cookbook for kids. Fortunately, Williams-Sonoma has a fantastic recipe index online and our oatmeal cookie recipe can be found here. I’m not saying these are gourmet or anything. But they are simple and tasty cookies that your kids will eat. Even better, your kids will love to help you make them.
