the review: fairy sticks

I’m a fan of pop tarts. I know, I know. Total garbage and I shouldn’t even admit in public that I like them, but pop tarts are happy childhood food to me. That’s not to say that I ate them non-stop during my childhood, oh no. My mom was pretty consistent with the no sugar rule, especially when it came to breakfast foods. It’s cool, though, I don’t need therapy or anything. At least not for that. Anyway, I let my kids have way more sugar than I should. Even I wouldn’t let them eat pop tarts for breakfast. Let’s call it a dessert, shall we? But when I saw these cute little mini pop tarts on Pinterest, I had to make them.

on twitter and taking time off

I participate in a weekly twitter chat with a bunch of other bloggers called #AltChat. This week’s topic was avoiding creative burnout and began with a discussion of the well-known John Lennon quote: “Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.” After a few minutes of chat between participants, new questions are asked https://twitter.com/altsummit . Last week’s questions were about wasting time, relaxing, taking time off, and favorite summer activities.  The last question was perhaps the best: What can you do this week to waste a little time in a healthy way?

dressing for the grocery store: the princess collection

A week or so ago, we were in the local five and dime (what do you even call that now? the discount store? the junk shop?), when my youngest daughter pulled out the total screamer. We were in the toy section so that Gus could pick out a toy for (FINALLY) completing his clean-up chart. Théa had finished her chart two weeks prior – a lifetime ago to a four year old – and did not understand why Gus was the only one who could pick something out. The dialog went something like this:

the weekly craft update: weeks of july 7 and july 14

I’m telling you. I can’t keep up at this pace. How do these fancy bloggers do it? I mean, if I can remember to take a shower some days, I am totally proud of myself. Remember how I said that I was going to slow down this summer? I'm still working on that. I really do want to do crafty things, though, especially with the kids. When we last left off, we had experienced a complete and total craft fail attempting to make bouncy balls.

pizza dough two ways

I may have mentioned that the teenagers are eating me out of house and home. Not just my kids, but their friends too. I have been to Costco (my favorite place in the universe for those who know me, I mean I just look at the industrial size mayonnaise and want to dive in) twice in as many weeks. I can’t keep food in my refrigerator or pantry. I go to cook something and the ingredients are gone. Oh, you needed that? Sorry, I was hungry. So in an attempt to load up the snack bins, I got out the stand mixer last week and rocked out some pizza dough.

the weekly craft update: weeks of june 8 and 15

Now that we are all on board with my new crafting strategy wherein I craft something with my kids every week, we should probably get all of you non-Instagram followers caught up. You would save me so much time if you just followed me on Instagram, you know. Just kidding. But really, we should be friends on Instagram. I can never keep a secret and I am forever giving away my best stuff over there. Unfortunately, there might be a few too many pictures of my kids. But I do promise no pictures of my cup of coffee or a box of donuts or my feet or an airplane wing.

on summer lists and slowing down

We started tennis lessons last Friday. I wasn’t sure that I even wanted to go because my husband was still out of town and we were supposed to play together. But I did go and I’m really glad I did. Not only did I get help with every stroke (holy moly, my serve is horrible) and work muscles that I didn’t know I had, but I heard something that I desperately needed to hear. You know how sometimes a message is delivered simply in one context but the message actually applies to a far wider area then intended? This was one of those moments.
